| The Waikato rock climbing area encompasses the city of Hamilton, extending
as far south as Lake Taupo and as far east as Lake Rotorua. The rock climbing
in this area is extensive with more that 30 crags (not all shown on the
map below). Wharepapa South is by far the
most popular rock climbing location, with a number of excellent crags within a small area and
with easy access. Due to the number of rock climbing areas around Wharepapa,
it has been defined as a separate climbing region.
