Mt Eden Quarry

Introduction

Near the city centre Mt Eden Quarry offers a good range rock climbing on columnar basalt. While there are some bolted routes the majority can be protected naturally or top-roped using the bolted anchors provided. The Quarry is divided into two climbing areas the "Long Side" and the "Short Side", both of which have good access.

Climbs & Access 

Long Side

The Long Side is located on the lower fields of Auckland Grammar School which is situated on Mountain Road. After obtaining permission for rock climbing from the school (phone (09) 623 5400) proceed through the upper entrance towards the Centennial Theatre. From there follow the small road that leads down to a car park and the Tennis Courts, you cant miss it.

Short Side

The Short Side rock climbing area is located on the other side of Auckland Grammar School and access can be gained from the upper fields and down the concrete path near the incinerator. Probably the best access down a grassed entrance next to the Hockey Club on Normanby Road
