Introduction
One New Zealand’s the original rock climbing areas, Mangatepopo Valley
is located in the
western section of the Tongariro National Park. With its
relaxing walks, easy access and superb adventure climbing, the area is
will worth the visit.
Access
Mangatepopo
Valley located between Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe and access is
via an unsealed road leading from State Highway 47. From the highway
it is a short drive to the car park and a 20 minute walk to the
Department Of Conservation (DOC) hut, with climbs located within easy walking distance.
As the area is administered by DOC access is seldom a problem,
however obey the signs.
Climbing
While the area is very accessible it is an
alpine area, so be sure to take suitable clothing and equipment.
